August 2007

Wisdom, power, treasure, healing, and more are what we will wrestle with this month in worship.  WISDOM, because God’s wisdom is always higher than our knowledge.  POWER, because those who have it, often don’t recognize the difference between power and authority, and confusing the two can have disastrous consequences.  TREASURE, because it seems every age lives in the quest of it.  And  HEALING because that’s what Jesus did.  Healed people.

On second thought, the reason we’ll wrestle with all of these in worship this month is because Jesus said it, and we’re not always comfortable with what Jesus says.  Especially when it comes after he’s said, Come, follow me.

Also, be sure to grab the Gospel Box.  Fill it with your inspired scripture reflections.

SUNDAY August 5th Wisdom (10th Sunday after Pentecost)

(Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14, 2:18-23; Psalm 49:1-12; Luke 12:13-21)  Quick, what is the primary theme of one-third of the Old Testament?  The answer is, Wisdom.  Not just knowledge of something or someone, or power, but the wisdom to know how to live with and use (or not use...) that knowledge or power.  The hard part?  Wisdom rarely comes in neat packages.  In fact, it can even be just a bit cranky.  Come and see.

SUNDAY August 12th Where is Your Treasure? (11th Sunday after Pentecost)

Reading: Genesis 15:1-6; Psalm 33:12-22; Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16; Luke 12:32-40)  Where is the safest place to store your valuables?  In the bank?  Under the mattress?  Where you keep your treasure tells more about you than you think.

SUNDAY  August 19th There is No Halfway (12th Sunday after Pentecost)

(Reading: Jeremiah 23:23-29; Psalm 82; Hebrews 11:29-12:2; Luke 12:49-56)  “I come to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!”  Do those sound like the words of Jesus to you?  We talk about Jesus bringing peace and unity, but there are teeth to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.   Come and hear!

SUNDAY August 26th Coming Home (13th Sunday after Pentecost)

(Reading: Isaiah 58:9b-14; Psalm 103:1-8; Luke 13:10-17)  Deep within the human heart one finds a longing for home. To one who has lived far from that place of her deepest longings for so long, Jesus says, “Welcome home.”  How about you?
