Worship Life in September...

At Sammamish Hills Lutheran Church we have enjoyed a busy and worship filled summer, but now we move into the fall.  Sunday School is kicking off, fall programs get underway, and service times change.

In the midst of all this change we rejoice to know we worship a God who does not change.  Our God will never let us down.  Come hear the good news in a new way!

Please tell your friends and neighbors, starting on September 10th the worship times will be 8:30 (traditional), 10:00 (contemporary), 11.27 (emergent/postmodern), and in the evening First Night at 7:30!

SUNDAY September 3  Screen Door on a Submarine  (Celebration of Vocation)

(Reading: Psalm 15; James 1:17-27; Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23)
What is useful to us as Christians?  What are the ways we order our lives?  Jesus comes into conflict with religious types more concerned with appearances than with the heart of the matter.  To what do we pay attention?

HYMN OF THE DAY: Seek Ye First The Kingdom Of God

SUNDAY  September 10  Be Opened (Rally Day)

(Reading: James 2:1-10, 14-17; Mark 7:24-37)  Rally Day.  A demon possessed girl and a deaf man.  Both invisible to the eyes of the good religious people of their day.  Then Jesus healed both, saying to the second, “Ephphatha,” “be opened!”  Would that it were so easy to open closed hearts.  Perhaps on this day the One who makes the deaf to hear will also make closed hearts sing.

HYMN OF THE DAY:  Open My Eyes, that I May See

SUNDAY  September 17  Who?

(Reading: Psalm 116:1-9; James 3:1-12; Mark 8:27-38) Lasting identity seems to be in short supply these days, for it appears “image” is more important.  How might the Gospels read today if Jesus would have had a media advisor?  Nonetheless, the question stands, “Who do you say that I am?”  And your answer is…?

HYMN OF THE DAY:  I Love to Tell the Story

SUNDAY  September 24 Resist the Devil (Baptism Sunday)

(Reading: James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a; Mark 9:30-37)  Years ago the comedian Flip Wilson’s tag line was, “The devil made me do it.”  We live in a far more scientifically self-actuated era these days.  No longer would we blame the devil.  Perhaps now, we postmoderns would say, “My parents made me do it!”  But James tells every generation, “Resist the devil…draw near to God.”

HYMN OF THE DAY:  O Father, We Have Wandered
