Worship Life in August...

We’ll continue following the apostle Paul on his journeys under the series, “Pack Your Bags.”  What we’ve experienced thus far is Paul’s tenacious refusal to proclaim anything but Christ crucified, saying, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:19-20, NRSV)  Ultimately, Paul ends up in Rome, in confrontation with the greatest “principality and power” of his time.  What does Paul do?  Come and see!

SUNDAY August 6  Pack Your Bags:  A Known God
(Reading: Acts 17:16-34; John 6:24-35) As he traveled, Paul encountered a wide variety of people all at different stages of faith.  What did he say to those who worshipped everything?  Is that even possible?  We hear the words of Paul as he proclaims the one true God.  We join in the chorus of saints who proclaim “Our God is alive and real!”

SUNDAY  August 13  Pack Your Bags:  Shipwrecked!

(Reading: Acts 27:1-12; Acts 27:13-26; Acts 27:27-44) How often do you feel completely in control?  How much energy do you spend on trying to influence the actions of others?  Paul finds himself in a dicey situation, but his faith holds strong.  Sometimes a shipwreck is just what we need.

SUNDAY  August 20  Pack Your Bags:  And at the End… (Baptism)

(Reading: Acts 28:17-31) It is the end of the Book of Acts, and our summer series.  Paul is in Rome, the seat of power for the Western world at that time.  Did he temper his witness?  Not hardly.  What’s our excuse?

SUNDAY  August 27  Real Bread, Real Life (Annual Picnic, shared with Grace Chinese Lutheran Church)

(Readings: Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18; Ephesians 6:10-20; John 6:56-59)  I love bread.  Its hard to put it any other way.  But not just any bread…it has to be GOOD bread.  Bread where there is a great balance between the hard crust that crackles as it is torn and the chewy, yeasty smelling inner layers.  Bread that has been given time to rise, filling the whole house with its wonderful smell as proteins and gases do their magic dance of raising a whole loaf.  After experiencing such wondrous bread, everything else is a poor substitute.

In Sunday’s Gospel reading, Jesus talks about real bread, saying, The one who eats this bread will live forever.  Come, eat, taste and see that the Lord is real and there is no substitute.
